Lesedi “Sediie. K” Kaotsane is a 25-year-old lady from Kuruman who enjoys cooking and playing netball in her spare time. Deejaying is a hobby and a lifestyle that started speaking to her when she lost her mother in July 2018.
Was it hard to learn the mechanics behind Deejaying?
Honestly, for me, it was not difficult at all to learn how to play. The problem started the moment I needed to play in front of a crowd. I always wanted my mentor to be close to me; I had zero confidence in myself when I started. People think that being a DJ is an effortless way to make money.
It’s not only about how you play as a DJ but also about your brand and how you market yourself especially starting where you are based like for me that is in Kuruman. Your marketing has to be particularly good, and you have to work with a lot of people so that your name can be known. People do not book DJs that they have never heard of or heard play. So, I think once you get good at your craft and get traction, it becomes easy money.
The first two years were really difficult for me because I am the first female DJ in Kuruman (and the surrounding areas) and being the first comes with many difficulties and insecurities. Men do not particularly believe in women, so you have to work hard and push yourself. I’ve been Deejaying since 2018, and my experience has been getting better and better. My work speaks for itself, and this is why I now don’t experience as many hurdles as I used to.
Self-inspiration
I inspire myself so much. There has been so much growth in this journey, and I cannot help but be inspired by myself so much. I pray that my career grows. By then, I would like to be a national DJ with music that belongs to me. In 5 years, I see myself venturing into music production and all good things.
What advice would you give a young girl who has dreams of becoming a DJ one day?
Just start. Don’t wait for tomorrow, next week, or next year. Start right now with what you have, and the rest will follow.
My biggest milestone has to be playing for the Tequila Gang. Tequila Gang is a crew that has created a huge movement and is following the deep house scene. I have played twice for Tequila Gang, and I am very excited about this as it has opened many doors for me and firmly placed me in the Gauteng DJ
market.
DJ Sediie. K plays deep house music and listens to deep house music “I love it so much”.
